Contemporary contributions include the Marshall Islands where the Marshallese used to practice traditional tattooing but no longer do so. The demise of Marshallese tattooing is also included in this unit. By the late 19th century the popularity of Marshallese tattooing decreased greatly. The Christian influence of missionaries also led to the downfall of tattoos' popularity. In the Arctic, tattoos are a disappearing art just like in the Marshal Islands. Many believed that specific designs would cure the body. Tattooing was also used as an acupuncture tool where a pigment was deliberately used in the acupuncture to leave small dots. Contemporary contributions also refers to Polynesia's relationship with tattoos. Many practices have been lost but the revival of ancient arts can inform younger generations of people. Current events around the world revolving around tattooing include the loss of tradition but the area to grow and improve. Modern tattooing uses traditional methods as well as new ones to create new art. As of now traditional tools used in tattooing are making a comeback and there are more people interested in giving and receiving tattoos. In countries where tattoos have been shunned and seen as disgusting the time to change this idea is now. Even in Japan, tattoos are growing a better reputation. Tattooing will continue to be a part of most cultures and the room to improve tattoo techniques and art is.
